Food revolution

This is my last bit of work for 2012, but it’s been quite a big project. A folded poster for Corporate Watch on a selection of the bad food production methods employed around the world, and some of the ways that farmers are coming together to create a more sustainable form of agriculture.

It was a steep learning curve working on a poster this large with this much detail. I quickly realised the only way to get my computer to do the job was to work in different segments and then composite the image in InDesign. Even then I was still finding myself having to flatten bits of the image far more often than I normally would. I feel like I learnt alot to do with process!

More details from the image are below. Corporate Watch deliberately wanted to keep it international on ‘The Good’ side so there’s a range of flora and fauna that wouldn’t normally be found next to each other. ‘The bad’ though was specifically aimed at palm tree oil plantations to be used as an allegory for all agricultural monocultures.

No more projects till 2013 now, hope everyone gets what they want from Santa Claus, Babbo Natale, Père Noël etc.

I’ve printed up some christmas cards for 2012. I wanted to send something out to all the cool people I’ve worked with over the past year! For the design I figured christmas wouldn’t be christmas without a bunch of kids and punks cycling through the snow. And as if by some prophetic miracle it snowed (a bit, a very little bit) in London today, so maybe I’ll have the chance to dress up as a santa and dice with death on icy streets before christmas. Anyway, below is the card, inside, and some detail of the ridiculous texture that I felt the need to add in (click to make stuff bigger).

There’s still a few more projects to finish off before the end of the year, so I can’t fully relax yet, but looking forward to spending the next couple of weeks gorging myself on mince pies!

Paulina Annenkova

I illustrated the cover and the map for Kingston Books’ publication of Paulina Annenkova the debut novel of Catherine Weir. The novel is based on a true story and takes place in early 19th Century Russia, just after the Decembrist’s revolt and follows the aftermath of Ivan Annenkova being sentenced for his involvement in the revolt and his partners exhausting journey across Russia to follow him to Siberia.

Kingston Books asked me to illustrate the cover and map for their, just published, book Paulina Annenkova by Catherine Weir. I also built a simple website for Catherine to showcase the book.

The map (and some detail)

The wizard of Oz of finance

Ah, so I appear to have left this in limbo a while. Clearly need to do better with the internet. This:

Is an illustration I did for STIR’s new book, titled simply ‘Volume 1′ and exploring ‘how inspiring and innovative groups are taking cooperative and community-led ideas from the margins to the mainstream’. The illustration is looking at how the world of finance is akin to the controller in the Wizard of Oz, I even got to draw the monkeys as cool robot dudes.

The book’s being launched tomorrow – 24th November – at Firebox in London. You can see more details here

We are revolting

(full disclosure I’m posting this in November because I forgot to post it when I should have done.)

I created this as a sticker for Active Distribution. It’s part of a series of stickers that we’re going to, hopefully, be publishing together. We’ll see. They’re stickers I wish I’d had as a teenager for my skateboard rather than the Garbage Pail Kids. It’s actually a lot smaller than it is on your screen, the stickers are actually A7.

Resurgence

Illustrations in the August/ September issue of Resurgence/The Ecologist (their first joint publication together). The article was about the need for the environmental movement to move away from lobbying Westminster and consider more concrete tactics of re-using land and stopping environmentally destructive industries.

I’m heading to Cuba tomorrow with my very awesome girlfriend. This isn’t quite ‘finished’ – and it’s part of a series about camping in the UK – but it seemed an appropriate thing to post up on the blog since we’re going off exploring for a couple of weeks! Anyhow, I’m looking forward to having a bit of a break before working on some really exciting projects when I get back in the autumn.
